Hawaii becomes a few bugs richer

Bioblitz for Hawaiian Drosophilid Flies (Fruit Flies) in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park Finds New Species – A total of 21 species including three previously undescribed Drosophila flies and one new species of Scaptomyza fly were discovered in January and September at the Kahuku addition of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Scientists from the USGS Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of California at Davis, and the Bishop Museum in Honolulu participated in the Blitz.
