Malama ‘Aina – Island wide hiking challenge: 1,000 steps at a time

May 26, 2014

Normally, you may think National Trails Day is just a day for hiking. If you want a different experience, hike four trails in 30 days.

Did you know that on Hawai`i island there is one National Historic Trail, Ala Kahakai, which traverses four National Parks: Pu‘ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, Pu‘uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, & Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

This year, celebrate trails not just on the official National Trails Day® Saturday June 7 but for the whole month of June. How?

1. Pick up a National Trails Day card at any National Parks’ visitor center.

2. Hike a section of Ala Kahakai NHT and a trail in 3 of the 4 Hawai’i island parks from June 1 to June 30, 2014.

3. Each time you complete a hike, validate your card at that park’s visitor center.

4. Turn in the card when 4 hikes are completed and get an Ala Kahakai pin and an opportunity to win an “America the Beautiful” pass.

On July 4th, the winner, one hiker from all the entries from all the parks, of an  “America the Beautiful” pass will be announced. This pass covers entrance fees to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites and is valid for 12 months from month of purchase. It is donated by Ala Kahakai Trail Association, 501c3 non-profit partner of Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail. To find more about the “America the Beautiful” and other passes, visit http://www.nps.gov/ find a park/passes.htm.

Mahalo nui loa (Thank you very much) …for hiking to experience the one and only National Historic Trail in Hawai‘i and the four National Parks on Hawai‘i island, for having an active lifestyle and for supporting all trails every day and in celebration of National Trails Day®.
