Occasionally when an NPS scientist pokes around with a camera, they come across a gem of a photo.

Here, a group of spotted eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari) swims above the reef at Kalaupapa National Historical Park. Every year, divers from the NPS Inventory and Monitoring program record the fish along dozens of transects (underwater paths) to keep tabs on the health of fish populations, and ultimately the ecosystem itself.
