Mount ‘Alava Stairs Near Summit Temporarily Closed for Safety

December 16, 2014

Due to unsafe conditions, the National Park of American Samoa has temporarily closed the stairs near the summit of Mount ‘Alava until further notice. The Mount ‘Alava Trail from Fagasa Pass remains open to the bottom of these stairs. Hikers will be able to reach the summit of Mount ‘Alava and the visitors’ fale via the Mount ‘Alava Adventure Trail accessible from the Vatia and Upper Sauma trailheads.

Tropical weather has caused these metal stairs to rust and break, posing a safety risk to visitors. The stairs will reopen once repairs are completed.

The national park maintains these trails to Mount ‘Alava to provide local residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy and experience American Samoa’s unique tropical rainforests, fruit bats, and native birds.
